Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary RV 11:19A; 12:1-6A, 10AB, 1 COR 15:20-27, LK 1:39-56 In our Gospel we witness Mary, Mother of the Lord, traveling to help her cousin Elizabeth with the birth of John the Baptist. There Mary proclaims the greatness of God who is always blessing his people. God is doing great things for her and for each one of us. Mary is the model Christian. Filled with the Holy Spirit she brings Jesus into the world. God will make her a sign for all of us. He raises her body from death and glorifies her in the Kingdom of Heaven. That is God’s promise to each of us. As we faithfully follow the Lord as his disciples, our sanctification and glorification in heaven are assured. In our reading from the Book of Revelation we see a vision of Mary as clothed with the sun. As she is about to give birth to the Savior of the world, the demon dragon is ready to destroy the child. But God saves the child who is given salvation and power to save the world. Mary’s role as Mother of the Redeemer continues in our lives today as Mary is made our Mother. On the Cross Jesus gives his Mother to John and the Church. Her ministry as Mother is powerful as she brings us to her Son who rules with an iron rod on our behalf. |
