St. Joseph Mass League on Father’s Day

Father’s Day reminds us each year of St. Joseph’s special relationship with all fathers. Quiet, faithful, and steadfast, St. Joseph protected and provided for the Holy Family with humility and courage.

Though Scripture records no spoken words from him, his life speaks powerfully to every generation about trust in God, loving sacrifice, and the sacred vocation of fatherhood. For many families, St. Joseph remains a source of comfort and strength — a patron not only of fathers, but of workers, families, and all those carrying heavy responsibilities with quiet faith.
For more than a century, the Redemptorists have entrusted countless prayers and intentions to St. Joseph through the St. Joseph Mass League. This year marks the 107th anniversary of the League, launched in St. Louis by Redemptorist Fr. Christopher McEnniry, C.Ss.R., in 1919. The League was founded during one of the darkest chapters in modern history. The devastation of the First World War had only just ended when the world was struck by the deadly influenza pandemic of 1918–1919. Before the pandemic subsided, an estimated 500 million people worldwide were infected, and millions lost their lives — including more than 675,000 Americans. Fear and grief touched nearly every community. Public gatherings were curtailed, quarantines imposed, and hospitals overwhelmed to the point that schools and private homes were converted into makeshift hospitals.
The Redemptorists, always close to the people they served, witnessed firsthand the suffering, anxiety, and uncertainty gripping families and communities. In those difficult days, Fr. McEnniry took inspiration from the words of Jesus in John 14:27: “Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” Out of that spirit of hope, he conceived the St. Joseph Mass League as a perpetual sharing in prayers and Masses — a spiritual source of healing, consolation, and strength for people in times of both joy and sorrow. The mission of the League, as Fr. McEnniry described it, was simple yet profound: “To help people in times of joy and sorrow.”
More than a century later, the mission of the St. Joseph Mass League continues with the same urgency and compassion. In a world still marked by uncertainty, division, illness, and loss, people continue to seek hope, prayer, and spiritual connection. Through the League, the faithful are invited to honor loved ones, remember those who have died, pray for healing and guidance, and deepen their relationship with God through the intercession of St. Joseph.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, we also give thanks for the enduring witness of St. Joseph — a protector in times of fear, a faithful father in times of uncertainty, and a reminder that God’s presence is often revealed through quiet acts of love and devotion. May his example continue to inspire fathers, families, and all who seek peace and courage in difficult times.
