Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This ancient feast calls the Christian community together in praising the Lord for the honor he bestowed upon Mary when she became Mother of the Word Incarnate. Mary is the perfect disciple who followed her Son as he preached God’s mercy. She is the image of the Church at prayer.

Redemptorists: Guardians of the Icon

Since 1866, the Redemptorists have spread devotion to Mary under the icon and title of Mother of Perpetual Help. In that year Pope Pius IX granted permission to move the icon to the Redemptorist Church of Sant’Alfonso in Rome. The pope also told the Redemptorists to “make her known throughout the world.”
