At the Table

Alleluia. He is Risen!

There are places I would rather not return to. If I could avoid it, I would gladly skip the dentist or a costly visit to the mechanic. I also don’t want to return to that New York City DMV I once had to visit, or any DMV for that matter.

Yet there are also places I long to revisit. A favorite restaurant. Time with family, especially during the holidays. Even moments from the past when life felt simpler, and loved ones were near. These are the places that draw the heart back.

In the Gospel of Matthew, after the Resurrection, Jesus tells the women: “Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” (Mt 28:10). Perhaps this is because in the Gospel of Matthew, Galilee is where it all began. It is where Jesus called his disciples, where he preached, healed, and revealed the Kingdom of God.

But this return is not about reliving the past. The risen Christ does not send the disciples backward. He sends them forward. In Galilee, they will see him again, but they will not be the same. Once followers, they are now entrusted with the mission. They are sent to proclaim, to heal, to forgive, and to serve, especially among the poor and wounded.

This is true for us as well. We are called to our own “Galilee,” not to remain in memory, but to renew our baptismal call. Christ has already gone ahead of us. We go as we are—wounded, uncertain, yet hopeful—because Christ is alive. The new Galilee is here and now. It is us who are now being sent.

Let us go—led by Christ, strengthened by the Spirit, and held in the love of the Father. Alleluia. He is risen. He is risen indeed!
